Web Conferencing Fills Void in Tight Times

During this current recession, companies are looking for ways to cut costs. One way is to cut out travel costs and leverage collaboration systems such as Web conferencing. Products in this category include Cisco WebEx, Citrix GotoMeeting, Microsoft Office Live Meeting and IBM Lotus Sametime Unyte all of which let users conduct meetings via the Internet.
- As businesses all over the world slide deeper into the yawning chasm of recession, CEOs and CFOs must strike a delicate balance between the cost and benefit of travel. Does meeting face to face outweigh the thousands of dollars spent for the business trip? In a recession, the answer is often no...

Groups Challenge Warrantless E-Mail Spying Law

Congress approved the FISA Amendments Act after a bruising battle this summer, and President Bush has signed it into law. Now comes the hard part: proving the constitutionality of the controversial law that essentially gives telephone companies legal protection from more than 40 civil lawsuits claiming the carriers provided customer telephone and e-mail records of millions of U.S. citizens--often without a warrant or subpoena--to the government.
- Congress may have decided to grant retroactive immunity to telecoms that helped the National Security Agency eavesdrop on American's telephone calls and e-mail, but now it's time to see what the courts have to say about the constitutionality of the law. The EFF (Electronic Frontier F...

Skype 4.0 for Windows Brings Back Compact Screen, Group Contacts

eBay's Skype VOIP telephony business adds some improvements to the second beta of Skype 4.0 for Windows, including the return of the compact screen and group contact capabilities. Reintroducing features from Skype 3.8 seems retro, but Skype needed to make the moves to keep its over 300 million users happy. Such improvements could lead new VOIP and telephony customers looking for free messaging and collaboration apps to Skype in a time of financial distress.
- Skype on Oct. 1 will launch the second Skype 4.0 beta for Windows with improvements to the way users view and access their VOIP conversations, as well as better instant messaging alerts. EFF Sues over Domestic Spying Program

With telco immunity approved by Congress, Electronic Frontier Foundation opens a second front in its long-running battle with the National Security Agency over the White House's warrantless domestic spying program. The new lawsuit targets the NSA and other government agencies in addition to the individuals responsible for creating, authorizing and implementing the program, including President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Skype's Chinese Chapter Caught Censoring, Archiving Messages

TOM-Skype, the Chinese chapter of Skype, has been caught filtering and archiving text messages. The Chinese VoIP service provider has eight dedicated servers for storing messages that contain certain politically contentious keywords, according to a report published by The Information War Monitor, a Canadian organization that monitors internet censorship.

Tom-Skype, a joint venture between eBay and China's TOM Online, also stores the usernames of all those people that exchange messages containing such sensitive keywords. Also, the service provider actively censors any politically sensitive keywords - some as harmless as "milk powder" - in messages. TOM-Skype doesn't restrict itself to Chinese users but freely records messages and usernames of other Skype users from across the world as well (only those users that exchange "obnoxious" messages with Chinese users). To top it all, all the private data is available publicly as it is hosted on unencrypted web servers.

OpenPeak's Atom-based Home/VOIP Phone on Steroids Ready for Production

OpenPeak is trying to spruce up the bland world of home or VOIP phones with its OpenFrame phone range. The company announced that its OpenFrame IP Media Phone is now ready for production. Service providers are expected to begin supporting the phone in Q1 2009.

It is certainly not a generic home phone as it deploys the Intel Atom processor. The touchscreen phone will provide a rich media experience along with voice and data services. OpenPeak believes that the phone will present new revenue opportunities to VOIP service providers. We will have to wait for a while to learn about its fate.

Sea of Change Sweeping Over Skype

With 309 million registered users and $126 million in first quarter earnings, it'd be easy to see why some might want to leave well enough alone, but don't expect Skype to remain stagnant. Despite the strong numbers, Ebay investors are into Skype for $2.6 billion, an amount most have since admitted was too much for the five year old company. In a bid for renewed faith for the pricey acquisition, Skype 4.0 will bring some major changes to the table, and you can test drive a beta version right now. Linksys CT200 Skype Phone

This phone is sexy. Sounds funny doesn't it? Cordless phones are supposed to be boring, black or gray, and for the most part, featureless. The CIT200 looks like a slightly oversized cellphone—it even has a color screen and easy-to-use menu options. Once you've juiced up the phone and installed Skype and the handset's drivers, you can plug in the phone's USB transmitter and you're good to go.
