jaxtr_logo.jpgJaxtr launches FreeConnect, a new service that provides free, unlimited member-to-member calling worldwide. With FreeConnect, jaxtr members will not incur long-distance charges on international calls, or be required to use Jaxtr credits - called "Jax" - to talk to one another using any landline or mobile phone.

Anyone can join Jaxtr and sign-up for a free basic membership. New members also receive a trial premium membership when they first join the service, which does not require a contract if continued. Digium Sees Sharp Rise in Asterisk Downloads in 2008

digium_logo.gifDigium announces that its Asterisk open source telephony software was downloaded 1.5 million times in 2008, more than any other year in company history and an impressive 50 percent higher than last year. The announcement caps a year of milestones and accolades for Digium and marks a promising start to 2009, when Digium celebrates the 10th anniversary of Asterisk, the open source software that has changed the telecommunications world.

Digium's strong 2008 year highlights the attractiveness of less expensive, easily customizable open source software in the current recession. Asterisk is the world's dominant open source telephony software. As the economic crisis worsened, Asterisk downloads rose by 32 percent from September through December, compared to a year ago.

Digium's top 2008 accomplishments include the launch of the beta version of Skype for Asterisk, which enables customers to make, receive and transfer Skype calls from within their Asterisk phone systems. Digium also completed the integration of Switchvox, provider of the world's foremost open source-based IP PBX, which Digium acquired in 2007. After successfully integrating Switchvox's channel partners, the Digium Authorized Reseller Program now includes nearly 400 resellers.

Additional accomplishments of 2008 include:

  • Digium's Switchvox AA300 – The award-winning AA300 appliance is a flexible, easy-to-use IP PBX that gives companies with up to 150 users a turnkey business telephone solution based on Asterisk software. After reviewing the Switchvox AA300, Matthew Nickasch, a blogger from Network World, wrote, "In my opinion, if there's an appliance or SMB IP-PBX to beat, this is the one."
  • Digium Exceptional Satisfaction Program – A bold new guarantee program ensuring the quality of Digium's hardware and software products and underscoring the reliability of open source technology. The Digium Exceptional Satisfaction Program is the most comprehensive product guarantee program in open source telephony today.

Additionally, Digium hosted the fifth-annual AstriCon, the industry's largest, most informative Asterisk community event, which boasted expanded track sessions and high-caliber industry keynote speakers. Phone.com Taps Voxbone

voxbone-logo.jpgVoxbone has been chosen by Phone.com to supply DID numbers abroad. Phone.com users who work in the U.S. but have clients in other countries can choose telephone numbers in those countries that when dialed will ring to their Phone.com "Virtual Office." The Virtual Office's customized auto attendant (automated receptionist) then can ask for the called person's extension number and complete the call.

Such calls are local to the caller; Voxbone carries them over its managed IP network to Phone.com, which routes them to its end customer with no perceptible delay. Phone.com customers pay a flat monthly rate for each DID. The numbers can also be directed to ring home phones or cell phones, and to change routing by time-of-day rules. DIDs can be ordered for all included cities and countries through Phone.com's self-service web site, and paid for, like all of the provider's services, with a credit card.

Voxbone leases international DID numbers and toll-free numbers via VoIP to organizations in North and South America, Europe and Asia/Pacific regions. Using these numbers, Voxbone customers may receive inexpensive, locally dialed phone calls from 46 countries (Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States).

Voxbone services, which include DID and toll-free numbers, are deployed by mobile operators, PSTN carriers, VoIP providers, call center operators and NGN service providers worldwide. Voxbone is a recognized member of the International Telecommunication Union and part of the study group that is responsible for numbering standardization around the world.

KINX Partners with XConnect to Launch National Peering Federation for IP Communications

XConnect has entered an exclusive agreement with Korea Internet Neutral Exchange to launch a Korean peering federation for IP communications. The new joint venture will provide advanced VoIP and NGN peering capabilities to Korea's IP communications providers, including mobile, fixed-line, and Web-based service providers and ITSPs. The agreement will also enable inter-federation peering with other initiatives around the globe, such as those formed through XConnect's Global Alliance and DirectRoute services. Peering will enable Korean operators to exchange calls via IP interconnection, which increases call quality and reduces unnecessary transit costs. Peering also enables these operators to securely offer services that the PSTN cannot carry, such as video and high-definition voice, across network boundaries.

SIP Peering, security, identity management

With all major leading Korean service providers already exchanging IP data packets through its facilities, KINX will use its partnership with XConnect to enable innovative ENUM registry and SIP interconnection services, as well as security and identity management capability, to deliver flexible and policy-based peering.

The full suite of XConnect's services will be deployed. These services include a multi-lateral interconnect platform, SIP interoperability, and optimized routing via the multi-protocol XConnect directory server, available through both hosted and locally resident options.

Access to other federations will be made available in several forms. International settlement-free peering will be offered through XConnect's Global Alliance. Federation member providers will also have the option to earn termination revenue from global wholesale carriers through XConnect's DirectRoute service, and to form separate, customized bilateral peering agreements with their own policies and settlement terms.

The Korean national federation announcement follows XConnect's development of similar national peering federations in the Netherlands and Brazil.

FacetPhone IP PBX Phone System Version 5 Announced

FacetCorp announces a number of important new features in FacetPhone. With the release of FacetPhone V5, a complete conference bridging capability has been added. Version 5 also includes support for most SIP trunking and VoIP services, as well as support for the popular Cisco 7940 IP phone. FacetPhone V5 now includes comprehensive call detail records in the standard MySQL format along with a MySQL database implementation, provides enhanced management for multi-location environments, and adds multi-zone paging to IP phones, as well as other significant IVR enhancements.

FacetPhone's new conference bridging feature allows customers to easily manage their own multi-party conference calls eliminating the cost of paying an outside conference bridging service. By adding support for SIP trunking and VoIP services, customers now have more low cost options for their telephone service, whether with SIP trunking, voice PRI T1, flex or dynamic T1, or traditional analog CO lines.

The FacetPhone IP PBX was already an ideal communications solution for companies with multiple office locations and for those with teleworkers. FacetPhone V5 extends those capabilities by keeping all FacetPhone PBX servers on the wide area network continuously and completely synchronized for configuration files, voice mail, recordings, call detail records, instant messaging logs and presence management status changes. In addition, the management mechanism for server control transition from one location to another has been streamlined and simplified.

The FacetPhone flexible and powerful IVR system has been significantly expanded to make employees more readily available. Facetphone IP-PBX users now may optionally let callers decide if they want to ring through to their cell phone or even to the paging system to reach them more quickly. And the paging system has been enhanced to include group paging, similar to zone paging except the paging messages may be delivered to many easily configurable destinations such as a specific set of IP phones, a set of one or more email addresses (delivered as a WAV file), or as an outbound phone call to one or more external phone numbers. The page messages can be newly recorded on-the-fly by a caller, or they may be "canned" prerecorded messages for certain situations.

FacetPhone V5 includes several new features for call center and contact center customers. All the FacetPhone IP PBX call detail records are now stored in the standard MySQL format, making it easy to customize reports and adding 3rd party report writing availability. Also new to FacetPhone V5 are two ACD (automatic call distribution) group features. Call center supervisors and managers may now select a fixed agent order for call handling, and they may start and stop recording on-the-fly, even while monitoring a call. For outbound calls, customers may specify the outbound callerID phone number and name either by user or by trunk group, controlling what the call recipient sees for outbound call campaigns.

Parked Call in Calls List
Another productivity enhancement included with FacetPhone V5 is the optional Parked Call Popup feature. When a call is parked, FacetPhone can automatically pop up a window on the computer screen of the person who parked the call giving them the option to add a note to that call on the FacetPhone graphical user interface. This note then shows up on the Calls List that everyone with permission can see.

Also in the area of productivity, users listening to their voice mail messages from a telephone now have the option to go backward (pressing *) or forward (#) 4 seconds at a time or they can pause the message playback by pressing 0. This is ideal for capturing a phone number someone has left in VM for a return call. And with FacetPhone V5, users have the option of having a "missed calls" message delivered to their voice mail box with the callerID information.

There is no charge for existing FacetPhone IP PBX customers who are under warranty or software maintenance to upgrade to Version 5. Customers not under maintenance or warranty may upgrade from Version 4 to Version 5 for $75 per port. Prospective new customers should contact FacetCorp for pricing, delivery and other information.
